Have you ever wondered where Estonian medicine was born or where the first gymnastics festivals in the Baltics were held? On which streets did future doctors study, midwives work, and the first tennis courts were built?
This approximately 2.5 km long walking tour takes you through the Old Town of Tartu and eight historical sites on Toomemäe that have shaped the history of Estonian medicine, healthcare, and sports. Along the way, you will learn how medical training developed, when exercise began to be valued as the basis of health, and what role the University of Tartu played in the development of these fields.
We will start at the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum and move past historical university buildings, former hospitals, gyms, and Toomemäe sports venues. At each location, an information board with a QR code awaits you, where you can read about the history of that location.
