Can’t Get Across the Emajõgi was inspired by an earlier event Paadiralli.
This year, the event is taking place for the second time in the history of Tartu Student Days.
The event got its name from the folk song Uhti Uhti Uhkesti, created by Ado Grenzstein.

The event consists of two parts:
- construction, which takes place next to the Delta;
- a long-distance raft race with rafts built by participants, which starts at the Delta and finishing at the Arch Bridge
Registration
- Registration is via Forms.
- Registration starts on 07.04.2025 at 18:00
Restrictions
- Everyone over the age of 18 is welcome to participate in the event.
- Participants must be sober.
- Since there is a risk of falling into the water during the event, participants must be able to swim.
Event description
The event consists of two parts, the first of which is team building of rafts and the second is rowing them from Delta to Arch Bridge. Participants are expected to build the vehicles on site, where the organizers have brought the necessary materials and tools. The team that receives the most points based on the points received from the jury and the code result of the time spent rowing will win the event.
Rules
- The materials and tools needed to build the rafts will be organized by the event venue organizer.
- The basic materials needed for construction are guaranteed to all participants. The basic materials are a pallet, two 20L beer barrels, four 5×5 beams, six 40x40x40mm corners, 20m of rope, twenty screws and twenty nails. In addition, there is also a so-called “shop,” where it is possible to purchase the materials needed to build the rafts with a given currency during the competition.
- In addition to the basic materials, each team is provided with a cordless drill, saw, hammer and knife for use.
- Event participants are allowed to bring their own pocket knife/multitool and a measuring tape, which can be used during the construction process. Other tools (except those provided by the organizers) are not allowed to be used.
- Each team can bring 3 large items and 2 small items. You can be creative when choosing items, but you must take into account the requirements set by the organizers. The item to be brought must not be a floating object (e.g. raft, inflatable boat, etc.) or a boat motor (or similar motor). The large item must be within the dimensions of 1.5×1.5×1.5m and the small item must be within the dimensions of 0.5×0.5×0.5m.
- Items to be brought must be listed on the Forms sent by the organizers after registration. At least one week before the event, the organizers will review the materials that participants are bringing, approve them or, if they are unsuitable, let participants choose new items.
- Each competition pair is assigned their own construction area, where they can plan and build the raft. The time for building the rafts is 2.5 hours.
- The main construction of the rafts takes place only in the construction area, minor repairs are also allowed elsewhere. By minor repairs we mean repairs that do not require tools (except for a personal multi-tool). Repairs that require tools must be carried out in the construction area.
- After the raft is completed, a technical inspection must be passed, where a person designated by the organizers will perform quality control of the rafts that go into the water.
- Participants must get the raft from the construction area to the technical inspection on their own.
- The technical inspector has the right not to allow the raft to enter the water if the inspection reveals any errors that could cause the raft to break apart upon reaching the water.
- Teams that have not passed the quality inspection have the right to repair the raft and submit it for a new inspection up to three times. After the third failure, the participants who made the raft will receive a disqualification.
- After passing the technical inspection, the participants must get the raft into the water under their own power.
- When entering the raft that is still in the water, both participants in the competition pair must wear a helmet and a life jacket, the availability of which is ensured by the organizer.
- 6 teams compete in the water at a time. After giving the start, both participants in the team must start rowing towards the finish line.
- The raft must be in a sitting/squatting/standing position. It is prohibited to be on the raft while lying on your stomach and to push off with your feet over the raft.
- Sabotaging other teams is prohibited.
- On the way to the finish line, everyone can also reach the prize islands, where they can receive special prizes or even tools that make it easier to control the raft.
- The top three of the competition are formed based on the points received from the jury and the combined result of the time spent rowing in the competition.
- After crossing the finish line, you must move to the boat jetty in front of Atlantis, from where you can get out of the water with the help of the organizing team. If for some reason you cannot get out of the water in front of Atlantis, you can also use the other boat jetty on the side of the Tartu Market Hall.
The organizers of Can’t get across Emajõgi reserve the right to modify the rules and terms of the contest. All participants will be notified of the changes before the start of the competition.
